Just out of curiosity, am I the only one who watches Fox 10 News in the morning just to see traffic reporter Andrea Robinson? I tuned in for her traffic report Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week, several times each morning to make sure I got all the latest updates. I walked to work all three days.
Exercise of civic duty
This Election Day morning, I decided to give new meaning to exercising my civic duty. I walked to the polls. Continue reading
Sharp dressed man
A few weeks ago, I started a new job, and I quickly realized I had a serious wardrobe problem. The few articles of clothing I still owned that were office-worthy were in a sorry state of repair. My shirts were pill-balled, my pants were becoming crotchless, my socks were threadbare, and my shoes were more scuff than polish. The items I could still wear were years old. It was time for some new clothes. Continue reading
I got served
About ten days ago, I found a jury summons in my mailbox. Fortunately, it was not addressed to me, but to someone else who probably used to live at my address. I left it in the mailbox, and within a few days, the letter carrier finally took it away. Continue reading
Pushing my buttons
Every once in a while, I have moments where I take an unhealthy delight in watching other people do something dumb. I know I should help them, but something inside me takes over and forces me to become an observer. I don’t often wear my emotions on my sleeve, making it pretty easy for me to appear to ignore everything around me. Continue reading
Vote no on everything
It’s that time of the year again. General elections are in five weeks, and although I’ve done a pretty good job of shutting up about them until now, those of you who know me know that I couldn’t stay silent for much longer. Continue reading
More on Circle K
I was in my local Circle K again last night, and for the third time in eight days, they carded me to buy beer. However, they now have signs posted by the registers telling customers it’s now a company policy to card everyone, no matter how old they look. Continue reading
Back to the grind
The rumors you’ve heard about me are true. Although I may occasionally come off as an independently wealthy trust-fund playboy, the fact is, I do have to work for a living. After a delightful 89-day break, I went back to work today. It was sort of an 11th-hour deal. Things had been in the works for about a week, but I didn’t find out until 6 last night that I was going back to work at 8 this morning. I don’t like to talk about my clients in this forum, but I can say it’s another government agency. That’s sufficiently vague. Continue reading
Strange things are afoot at the Circle K
Several months ago, I wrote about being carded when trying to buy beer just after having my hair cut. Well, today it happened again, after having my hair cut yesterday. The stylist joked about how much younger I looked when I left, but I still can’t believe someone would waste his time carding a man with gray hair, not matter how it was cut. I think the cashier at the Circle K is retarded.
Recent film binge
The last several days have been really quiet for me, with no work to do and no out-of-town trips planned. In fact, all I really did this week was jump-start my sister’s car and interview for a contract at a state agency. As a result, I’ve been watching a lot of movies lately. To keep my mind occupied, I thought I’d review my recent viewings, all of which are films I saw for the first time. I’m presenting them in the order I viewed them. Continue reading
Japanese maple
I was walking through the plant department at the Ikea in Tempe earlier today. The manager’s special this week is Japanese maple. I was not the only one who did a double-take as I passed by. From a short distance, it sure looked like something else.
Fascinating business model
My ISP has an fascinating business model. Continue reading
Election day ennui
The primary election is today in Arizona. Other than for something to blog about, I’ve discovered I really don’t care. Continue reading
On the grid
Just to let everyone know, I’m plugged into the internet at home once again. Even though I could send and receive e-mail on my mobile phone, it was rough being off the web for eight days. I was starting to have withdrawal symptoms. The ISP gave me a real account number this time, not just a working line, so I hope I won’t have the same problem again. On the other hand, I now know how to work the system if things go wrong.
Rebound
I received some sympathy regarding yesterday’s post, so I thought I would quickly mention that today went much, much better. I had two refreshingly productive meetings. Then I helped a developer with a programming problem that had him confounded. It was nice to begin the weekend on a high note.
Shadows and muffins
I was awake relatively early this morning, and as I had little to eat in my apartment, it somehow crossed my mind to walk—yes, walk—to my nearest Starbucks and get myself something to eat and a coffee to wash it down with. The recent discovery of a partially used Starbucks card in my wallet helped seal the decision. Continue reading
New mobile phone
For about two-and-a-half years, I’ve been suffering with a crappy mobile phone. Continue reading
Dust storm
I’m currently experiencing my first dust storm since moving to the Valley. I’d heard about them, but I’d never seen one. I turned on the evening news about a half-hour ago, and the storm was the top story. They showed an aerial shot of the Valley, and I could see the wall of dust approaching skyscrapers I could identify as being near my home. I looked out the window, and sure enough, the wall was approaching my place. Ten minutes later, it was here. I’m not sure how to describe it. The sky is full of dust, and there is a tremendous amount of wind, but there is still some visibility, maybe a half-mile or so. The news is saying it’ll be over in a half-hour or so.
Recent dining experiences
As much as I bitch about how lousy the dining is in the Phoenix area, I figured it was time to acknowledge some of my positive dining experiences. Here are a couple I’ve had recently. Continue reading
E-mail troubles
It looks like I may have lost a few e-mail messages this afternoon between about 4:00 and 4:30 Arizona time while I was reconfiguring my spam-trapping software. If you think you may have sent me a message during that time, please send it again to be sure I see it. Thanks!
